00A SOFA’S LIFE IN THE UK

Keep it longer.
Let it go well.

The label under the cushion matters more than you think.

A sofa’s fire label decides whether it can be sold on or donated. A broken leg is a minor repair; a collapsed frame is not. And when it is finished, an old sofa can no longer go to landfill. Here is how it works, in plain English.

Where can your sofa go?

01Principles

  • Find the label
  • Fix small things
  • Pass it on
  • No landfill at the end

02THE SHORT ANSWER

Label, repair, reuse.

Most of a sofa’s second life depends
on three things you can check at home.

FIRE SAFETY

Find the label

Look behind a loose cover or under a seat cushion for the permanent label headed CARELESSNESS CAUSES FIRE.

What it means

REUSE

Fix small things

A new leg is minor repair, so the sofa can still be reused. A collapsed frame needing stripping is not.

Where can it go?

END OF LIFE

No landfill

Waste upholstered seating containing POPs must be incinerated, so a finished sofa is handled differently.

03A QUICK CHECK

Where can
your sofa go?

Pick the description that fits your sofa best. Each answer summarises UK government guidance on reusing upholstered seating and Trading Standards advice on second-hand furniture.

This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. Your council or the charity collecting the sofa will have its own requirements.

Reuse check

Choose what describes your sofa
Sound and workingCan be reused

A sofa that is structurally sound and in working condition can be passed on for reuse, as long as its use keeps to the law, for example it carries the fire safety label.

A broken legMinor repair: reusable

Government guidance gives a sofa with a broken leg, where a new leg is fitted, as an example of minor repair. Once repaired it can still be reused.

No fire labelCheck before passing on

Used furniture must meet the same fire standards as new. Trading Standards advice is not to sell unlabelled items until expert advice is obtained.

Collapsed in the middleMore than minor repair

A sofa that has collapsed in the middle needs stripping and structural repair, so guidance says it does not count as minor repair. It is treated as waste.

Finished withWaste: incinerated

Waste upholstered seating containing POPs must be incinerated. It must not be landfilled, and landfill operators must not accept it.

04WHAT GETS THROWN AWAY

A lot of it
still had life in it.

A national study of bulky household waste
looked at what people discard, and why it matters.

42%

Share of UK bulky waste

Furniture made up about 42% of UK bulky waste, roughly 670,000 tonnes a year, in WRAP’s study of 2010/11 data. The study singled out sofas and beds as a significant reuse opportunity.

FURNITURE · WRAP STUDY

Just under 50%

Furniture reusable as is or after slight repair

Of furniture brought to household waste recycling centres, just under half was assessed as reusable as it was or after slight repair. At the kerbside, over 20% was reusable as it was.

RECYCLING CENTRES · WRAP STUDY

The data is from 2010/11 and the report is archived, but the point stands: a sofa that is sound when it leaves home has far more options than one that has been left out in the rain.

05FOUR HABITS

Four habits for
a longer sofa life.

  1. Find the label now

Lift the seat cushions or look behind a loose cover and check the permanent label is there and readable. Leave it attached: it is how the next owner knows the sofa complies.

  2. Fix small faults early

A wobbly or broken leg is a minor repair. Dealing with it before the frame strains keeps the sofa in the reusable category.

  3. Pass it on while it is sound

If you are replacing a sofa that still works, offer it for reuse. Keep it dry and undamaged, not in a skip with other waste, until it is collected.

  4. Ask before it goes

When a sofa is finished, use your council’s bulky waste service or recycling centre and say it is upholstered seating, so it goes for incineration rather than landfill.

  1. The label is permanent for a reason

New upholstered furniture must carry a permanent label headed CARELESSNESS CAUSES FIRE, with a batch code that traces the maker. It is usually behind a loose cover or under a seat cushion.

  2. Second-hand means the same standard

Used furniture must meet the same fire standards as new furniture in the shops: covers pass a match test, upholstery a cigarette test, and fillings must be fire retardant. Furniture made before 1950 is excluded.

  3. The shop tag went in 2025

Since 30 October 2025, manufacturers no longer have to attach a display label to new products. The government says the change does not affect the permanent label.

  4. Old sofas are burned, not buried

Waste upholstered seating containing persistent organic pollutants must be incinerated. Landfill operators must not accept it. Mattresses, beds and small scatter cushions are excluded.

  5. It is where we sit most

The NHS says many adults spend more than 7 hours a day sitting, and people over 65 spend 10 hours or more a day sitting or lying down.

07QUICK QUESTIONS

Sofas, answered.

Short answers to the questions people ask most.

Where is the fire label on my sofa?

New upholstered furniture sold in the UK must carry a permanent label headed CARELESSNESS CAUSES FIRE. It is usually behind a loose cover at the back or under a seat cushion, and includes a batch code that traces the manufacturer.

Can I sell or give away a second-hand sofa?

Used furniture must meet the same fire safety standards as new furniture in the shops. Government reuse guidance says a sofa can be reused if it is sound, needs no more than minor repair and its use keeps to the law, for example it carries the fire safety label.

Why can’t an old sofa go to landfill?

Sofa foam and fabric can contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs), chemicals once used as flame retardants. Waste upholstered seating containing POPs must be incinerated, and landfill operators must not accept it.

Are mattresses and scatter cushions covered by the same rules?

No. The waste seating guidance excludes mattresses, beds, curtains and blinds, and scatter cushions under 60cm by 60cm. Sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, futons, bean bags and seat cushions are included.

Did the furniture fire rules change in 2025?

Yes. Amendments in force from 30 October 2025 mean manufacturers no longer have to attach a display label to new products. The government says the changes do not affect the permanent label.
